Cultivated in warm climates worldwide; commercial supply largely from the Americas (Texas/Mexico) and Latin America.
Aloe vera 'gel' is the mucilage from inside the leaf of Aloe barbadensis. Strictly it is a water-based gel, not an oil, so it behaves differently from the carrier and essential oils elsewhere in this collection.
There is an important biblical distinction to keep in view: the 'aloes' of scripture almost certainly refer to fragrant aloeswood/agarwood (Aquilaria), whereas every modern 'aloe' product is from the aloe vera succulent. The two are unrelated plants.
Quality cues for aloe gel are different from oils: look for inner-leaf/'inner fillet' aloe high on the ingredient list, minimal and disclosed stabilizers, and avoidance of drying alcohol or artificial color. 'Whole leaf' products can contain aloin (a laxative latex) and are better filtered out for topical use.
Because a pure aloe gel always needs a little thickener and a preservative to be shelf-stable, a short, fully-disclosed ingredient list is the realistic standard here rather than a single-ingredient oil.

Biblical 'aloes' (e.g., in burial spices and as a fragrant wood) most likely refer to aloeswood/agarwood (Aquilaria) or a fragrant resin, not the succulent we call aloe vera. The aloe vera plant itself has a long, separate folk-medicine history for soothing skin and burns.
Modern Uses
Aloe vera gel is used today to calm sunburn and irritation, as a light facial and body moisturizer, and as a hair/scalp and styling base.
