Argan Oil

Argania spinosa

A prized golden oil pressed from the kernels of the Moroccan argan tree, used for hair and skin.

Also known as Moroccan argan oil, argane.

Texture: light, silky, absorbs without heavy residueScent: mild, faintly nutty (cosmetic/unroasted)

Origin

The argan tree (Argania spinosa) grows almost exclusively in southwestern Morocco, where the oil is traditionally hand-pressed, often by women's cooperatives.

Cosmetic argan oil is cold-pressed from the kernels of the argan fruit (culinary argan uses roasted kernels and is a separate product). Good cosmetic argan is light, silky, and absorbs without a heavy residue, which is why it is so popular as a hair finishing oil and facial moisturizer.

A pure argan oil is a single ingredient. The biggest issue in this category is authenticity: argan is expensive, so cheaper 'argan' oils are often diluted with other oils. USDA Organic certification, glass packaging, named Moroccan (ideally cooperative) sourcing, and a sensible price all help.

It suits both hair and skin rituals, and a few drops go a long way. As a tree-nut-related oil, those with nut allergies should patch test.

Skin & Allergen Notes

Comedogenic 0/5ContainsTree nut

Argan kernel; flagged for tree-nut cross-reactivity caution though argan is not a top-tier allergen.

Traditional Uses

Berber communities in Morocco have used argan oil for generations both as a food and as a skin and hair treatment; its production by women's cooperatives is woven into its cultural story.

Modern Uses

A lightweight finishing oil for frizz, shine, and softness in hair, and a fast-absorbing facial and body moisturizer.

Take a Moment with Argan Oil

A Moment

A Morning Glow Moment

Before the day gathers speed, give your face a single quiet minute. After cleansing, while your skin is still a little damp, warm two or three drops of a light facial oil, argan or baobab, between your palms. Press it gently over your face and throat, never dragging, and take one slow breath as it settles. Nothing here needs fixing; you are simply starting the day on your own side.
