Baobab Oil

Adansonia digitata

A light, fast-absorbing oil pressed from the seeds of the African baobab tree, used for skin and hair.

Also known as tree of life oil.

Texture: light, silky, fast-absorbing, non-greasyScent: mild, faintly nutty

Origin

The baobab (Adansonia digitata), the iconic 'upside-down tree' of the African savanna, grows across sub-Saharan Africa. The oil is cold-pressed from its seeds; the fruit is also dried into a vitamin-C-rich powder.

Baobab oil is cold-pressed from the seeds inside the baobab fruit. Unrefined, it is a clear-to-golden oil that is notably light and fast-absorbing, which makes it pleasant on the face and on hair without a greasy finish.

A pure baobab oil is a single ingredient: baobab seed oil and nothing else. Look for cold-pressed, unrefined, hexane-free, and ideally organic and fair-trade sourcing, since baobab is wild-harvested and an important income source for rural African communities.

It suits skin rituals and hair care alike, and pairs well with heavier butters such as shea. Stored cool and dark it keeps well for a cold-pressed oil; discard it if the smell turns sharp or rancid.

Traditional Uses

Across Africa the baobab has been called a 'tree of life': a source of food, water storage, and skin and hair care, with the seed oil traditionally used to nourish skin and protect against sun and dry climate.

Modern Uses

A light, quickly absorbed facial and body oil, and a non-greasy scalp and hair oil, valued for its omega fatty acids and vitamins.

Take a Moment with Baobab Oil

A Moment

A Morning Glow Moment

Before the day gathers speed, give your face a single quiet minute. After cleansing, while your skin is still a little damp, warm two or three drops of a light facial oil, argan or baobab, between your palms. Press it gently over your face and throat, never dragging, and take one slow breath as it settles. Nothing here needs fixing; you are simply starting the day on your own side.

A Moment

A Nourishing Belly Moment

For skin that is growing and changing, let this be a few minutes of plain kindness: not a treatment, just care. After a warm shower, while your skin is still damp, warm a rich butter or oil between your palms: shea, baobab, or sweet almond. Massage it slowly over your belly, hips, and wherever skin feels tight, in soft, unhurried circles; the slowness is as much the point as the oil. If you are pregnant or postpartum, a quick word with your midwife or doctor about any new oil is always worth it.
