Black Seed Oil

Nigella sativa

A peppery oil pressed from Nigella sativa seeds, prized in traditional wellness.

Also known as black cumin, kalonji, nigella oil, black caraway, habbat al-barakah.

Texture: medium, slightly oilyScent: pungent, peppery, slightly bitter-herbaceous

Origin

Middle East, North Africa, India, and Turkey (Nigella sativa).

Black seed oil is cold-pressed from the small black seeds of Nigella sativa. Its signature compound is thymoquinone, the marker most associated with its activity; reputable brands press gently and protect the oil from heat and light.

It has a strong, peppery, slightly bitter taste. For potency, the key (if verifiable) is thymoquinone content; for purity, look for 100% cold-pressed Nigella sativa with no carrier oils added.

It is used both in the kitchen (small amounts, finishing) and topically. Because it is marketed heavily for health, it is important to keep claims gentle and grounded.

The seeds themselves, called kalonji or black cumin across the Middle East and South Asia, are as much a part of this story as the oil. They are tempered into breads, pickles, and curries for their peppery, faintly bitter warmth, and the pressed oil carries that same intensity, which is why it is traditionally taken in small amounts or blended rather than poured freely. A bottle lasts a long while; the flavor is meant to be met in drops, not spoonfuls.

Traditional Uses

Black seed (Nigella sativa, 'black cumin') has a deep place in Middle Eastern and South Asian tradition and is widely cited in Islamic medicine as a revered remedy. It is sometimes linked to the biblical 'fitches'/black cummin in Isaiah.

Modern Uses

Black seed oil is taken as a daily culinary/wellness oil (a small spoonful, or drizzled on food) and used topically on skin and scalp.
