Coconut Oil

Cocos nucifera

A versatile oil pressed from the meat of the coconut, solid at room temperature and used in cooking, skin, and hair care.

Also known as copra oil.

Texture: solid and creamy below ~76°F; melts to a light clear oil above itScent: soft, sweet coconut (virgin); near-odorless if refined

Origin

The coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) grows across the tropics; most virgin coconut oil is cold-pressed from fresh coconuts in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, notably the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia.

Coconut oil is pressed from the white meat of the coconut. 'Virgin' or 'extra-virgin' coconut oil is cold-pressed from fresh coconut without refining, bleaching, or deodorizing, so it keeps a soft coconut aroma and flavor. Refined coconut oil is more neutral but more processed.

It is solid and white below about 76°F and melts to a clear liquid above it: this is normal and not a sign of quality either way. A single-ingredient virgin coconut oil should list only coconut oil.

Coconut oil is genuinely versatile across cooking, skin, and hair, which is its main strength. One honest caveat for skin: it is considered comedogenic, meaning it can clog pores and cause breakouts for some people on the face, so it suits body and hair better than facial skin for many.

When buying, look for organic, cold-pressed, virgin, and a named Southeast Asian or Pacific origin. Glass packaging is preferable to plastic where available.

Skin & Allergen Notes

Comedogenic 4/5ContainsTree nut

FDA classifies coconut as a tree nut for labeling, though it is botanically a drupe; true coconut allergy is rare.

Traditional Uses

Coconut oil has been a food, skin, and hair staple across South and Southeast Asia and the Pacific for centuries, used for cooking, for oiling and protecting hair, and in traditional skin care.

Modern Uses

Today it is used for medium-heat cooking and baking, as a body moisturizer and oil-cleansing base, and as a popular pre-wash hair treatment and sealing oil for textured hair.
