Jamaican Black Castor Oil

Ricinus communis

A dark, roasted-bean castor oil traditionally made in Jamaica and prized for hair and scalp care.

Also known as JBCO.

Texture: thick, viscous, and coating; darker and ashier than standard castor oilScent: toasty, smoky, faintly nutty

Origin

The castor plant (Ricinus communis) traces to East Africa and India. The 'Jamaican black' method, roasting the beans and processing the oil with the resulting ash, was developed within the African diaspora in Jamaica.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) differs from standard castor oil in how it is made: the beans are roasted and the oil is processed with the ash, giving it a darker color, a toasty smell, and a slightly thicker, ashier character. The traditional belief is that the roasting makes it especially good for hair and scalp.

Like all castor oil, JBCO is very thick and viscous. A little goes a long way, and it is usually warmed and used sparingly, or diluted into a lighter carrier, especially for fine hair where it can sit heavily.

It is a cosmetic, not a food. Castor oil taken internally is a strong laxative, and while the pressed oil is free of the toxic compound ricin found in the raw bean, JBCO is intended for external use only.

When buying, prefer a named Jamaican maker, glass packaging, and a clear single-ingredient label. Roasted JBCO naturally has a smoky smell; a sharply rancid smell is different and means it has gone off.

Traditional Uses

Castor oil has ancient roots as a skin and lamp oil, and the Jamaican black method became a diaspora tradition for thickening and growing hair, soothing the scalp, and conditioning skin.

Modern Uses

Widely used today on edges and the scalp, along hair lengths and ends, and on lashes and brows, as well as a heavy conditioning skin oil.

Take a Moment with Jamaican Black Castor Oil

A Moment

A Scalp Care Moment

Find a slow few minutes, perhaps the evening before a wash day. Warm a little castor oil between your palms, part your hair, and massage your scalp in small, unhurried circles: patience, not pressure. Let your shoulders soften as you go. Leave it to sit a while, or rinse when you are ready; the moment itself was the point.
