Origin
Pressed from the inner seed kernel of the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), native to West Africa and now grown largely in Southeast Asia. A traditional West African skin and soap ingredient.
Palm kernel oil comes from the hard inner seed of the oil palm fruit, which makes it distinct from red palm oil (pressed from the fruit flesh). It is white, firm at room temperature, and melts on contact with skin.
Its most common role is in soap making, where its high lauric-acid content boosts lather and produces a harder bar, which is why it appears in traditional African black soap. As a standalone consumer product it is far less established than coconut or shea.
The central caution with any palm-derived oil is environmental: palm cultivation is a major driver of deforestation, so a trustworthy palm kernel oil needs documented deforestation-free, fair-trade sourcing. A credible source now exists: Baraka Shea Butter presses an RSPO-certified, fair-trade palm kernel oil traceable to women farmers in Ghana, which answers the sourcing question we couldn't in the past.
What's still missing is an honest buy-path: Baraka sells only through its own site with no affiliate program, and the palm kernel oil available on Amazon is brand-anonymous soap-making supply. So this entry stays educational for now: it explains part of what black soap is made from, and a pick waits until our West-African buy-path (Localization Phase 2) makes a source like Baraka linkable.
