Origin
Tamanu (Calophyllum inophyllum) is a coastal tree across Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands (notably Polynesia), with a range extending into parts of Africa. The oil is pressed from its nuts.
Tamanu oil is a thick, rich, dark-green nut oil pressed from the seeds of the tamanu tree. It is naturally heavy and intensely scented, and is usually used sparingly or blended into a lighter carrier oil.
A pure tamanu oil is a single ingredient. Look for cold-pressed, unrefined, and a named Southeast Asian or Pacific origin. The deep color and strong nutty smell are normal characteristics, not faults.
It is popular for the appearance of scars and for blemish-prone or irritated skin, but this is cosmetic use: claims that it 'treats' skin conditions should be treated with care, and anyone with a skin condition or broken skin should check with a professional.
Tamanu is a nut-derived oil, so those with tree-nut allergies should avoid it or patch test very carefully.
