Vitamin E Oil

A skin-conditioning oil delivering vitamin E (tocopherol), commonly used on scars and dry patches.

Also known as tocopherol, tocopheryl acetate.

Texture: thick and slightly sticky; spreads thin in a small amountScent: faint, mild, slightly oily

Origin

Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a nutrient most often derived from plant oils such as soybean, sunflower, or wheat germ, then blended into a light carrier oil for topical use.

Vitamin E oil is less a single botanical and more a delivery of the nutrient tocopherol for the skin. Because pure tocopherol is extremely thick and concentrated, most topical 'vitamin E oil' is tocopherol blended into a light carrier oil, which is normal and appropriate, but means it is rarely a literal single ingredient.

It is widely used on dry patches and on the appearance of scars and stretch marks, and as an antioxidant boost in a routine. Evidence for dramatically improving scars is mixed, so it is best framed as conditioning and 'commonly used for' rather than a corrective treatment.

When buying, look for natural d-alpha tocopherol (sometimes with mixed tocopherols) rather than synthetic dl-alpha, a short and transparent carrier list, and dark glass.

Because many formulas use a soybean-oil carrier, those with soy sensitivity should read labels and patch test.

Skin & Allergen Notes

ContainsSoy

Tocopherol is commonly soy- or sunflower-derived; the allergen depends on source feedstock - verify per product.

Traditional Uses

Vitamin E does not have an ancient single-plant tradition like the other items here; the carrier oils that supply it (wheat germ, sunflower) have long histories in skin care.

Modern Uses

Topical vitamin E oil is commonly used on dry patches, on the appearance of scars and stretch marks, and as an antioxidant addition to skin routines.
