Orange Oil

Citrus sinensis

A bright, sweet citrus essential oil pressed from orange peel, used mainly in aromatherapy.

Also known as sweet orange oil.

Texture: thin, light essential oil (always diluted before skin use)Scent: sweet, bright, true orange

Origin

Sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) originated in Asia and is now grown across warm regions worldwide, including the Mediterranean, the Americas, and Africa. The essential oil is cold-pressed from the peel.

Sweet orange essential oil is cold-pressed (expressed) from the peel of the orange, which gives it a fresh, sweet, true-to-fruit aroma. It is one of the most approachable and affordable essential oils.

Like all essential oils it is concentrated and must be diluted in a carrier before skin use and is not for ingestion without professional guidance. As a citrus oil it deserves a phototoxicity caution: while expressed sweet orange is generally considered lower-risk than bergamot or lime, citrus oils on the skin can react with sunlight, so avoid sun exposure on treated skin for a period after use.

In aromatherapy it is prized as an uplifting, calming-yet-cheerful scent that blends well with spices and other citrus.

When buying, look for the botanical name (Citrus sinensis), single-ingredient oil, GC/MS reports, and dark glass. Citrus oils oxidize relatively quickly, so smaller bottles and cool, dark storage help.

Skin & Allergen Notes

Phototoxicity caution belongs in safetyNote (citrus); not an allergen.

Traditional Uses

Citrus peels have long been valued across cultures for their uplifting fragrance in cleansing, cooking, and seasonal celebration.

Modern Uses

Sweet orange essential oil is used mainly in aromatherapy for a warm, cheerful scent, and, well diluted, in skin and home blends.

Take a Moment with Orange Oil

A Moment

A Midday Breath Moment

When the afternoon starts to blur, give yourself the smallest of resets. Put a single drop of peppermint or sweet orange on a tissue or your palm, hold it a little away from your face, and take three slow breaths: cool and clarifying, or bright and lifting. Roll your shoulders back. Let your eyes rest from the screen for a moment. Then return to the day a little clearer. It takes less than a minute, and asks nothing of you but to pause.
