Olive Oil at the Table: Gentle Changes

My relationship with olive oil began in church, not the kitchen. This is the part of my story where it found its way to my table.

What the Reading Taught Me

After a heart diagnosis, an older friend suggested I learn more about extra-virgin olive oil, and that advice sent me reading. I made these changes alongside my doctor's care: this is my experience, not a prescription.

I discovered that extra-virgin olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats and plant compounds called polyphenols, which research suggests may support healthy cholesterol levels and a balanced response to inflammation when olive oil is part of an overall balanced diet. What I had known only as a symbol of faith and anointing became something practical in my everyday life.

An Unexpected Kindness

There was an unexpected kindness for my digestion, too. As someone living with obesity, bloating had been a regular frustration; I have found that a little olive oil helps keep my digestion moving and leaves me feeling lighter.

I laugh about this ritual more than any other, and laughter, I would tell you, is part of healing too. Bodies differ; what settles one may not settle another.
